Forward Thinking

As some of you may know, President Barack Obama will be on campus this week. (More specifically, the 16th). As some of you may also know, this week is “Coming Out Week”, and the Battalion has already made mention of the event.

Seeing as this is my first post for Aggie Blogs, I just wanted to offer a word of friendly Aggie encouragement for the week and sentiments to live by in the future…

Texas A&M University is for the majority of the time, seen as a very conservative campus. We uphold traditions and try to encourage others by actively saying “Howdy” when we get an opportunity. We shed tears for those that have gone before us, with Muster and we celebrate victories when standing at Kyle field. We are known for these things and we should take pride in the school we’ve chosen to be apart of, whether we are a first generation Aggie, or the grandchild of a Dean.

We are also known for our kindness and servitude and we should remember that this week especially.

With all of the events going on around campus, it’s important to remember why you chose to go to this school. It’s more than just a great place to get an education; it’s also our building block for discovering why we believe what we do, as we meet others who may not have the same background as us or the same opportunities, but are looking for equality, none the less.

I don’t want to be a buzzkill…just a reminder that we represent this University in everything we do. No matter what your religious affiliations, ethnic/cultural background, or political outlook, we should go out of our way to show this nation that Texas A&M is respectful. (On top of being ‘all out’ awesome).

Lauren, you just made me proud as hell. Whoop for my awesome freshmen
P.s. If by any chance you aren’t the Lauren Dickerson that was a freshman in DiSanto, I still liked the post.

Hahaha, hey Matt. DiSanto for life! And thank you very much. Ps, my picture will be up there soon…so hopefully that will lead to less confusion!

Nicely said. As an Aggie, I hope that the student body doesn’t look like a bunch of loonies on TV. As a democrat, I hope Obama leaves TAMU with a respect for our school, our students, and our traditions.

I was on campus during a campaign stop for George H. W. Bush in 1993 and I remember all the urging in the Batt to the “liberals” on campus to be respectful. I attended (who wouldn’t attend to see a sitting President on your own campus even if you didn’t agree with them) and don’t regret my decision. It was a respectful attitude inside the auditorium.

Gig’em,
Sid Boswell
